Feedback from the Police following the KS3 visit to Melton

On Tuesday the 28th of January KS3 students from Rise Academy took part in an educational visit to the Melton 2 which is where the force control room for Humberside Police is located. The students were escorted around by a supervisor who explained to them in detail what happens when someone makes a 999 call for Police and the process of what happens next.

The students were given the opportunity to walk around each part of the force control room area and observe live CCTV footage from across the region. The students also had the opportunity to watch from a distance as both call takers were answering real 999 and 101 calls to the Police and dispatchers as they sent Police officers to live ongoing incidents.

This was planned for the students to try to educate them on ASB and how it can have not only a direct but also an indirect effect other people.  As well as the seriousness of making hoax 999 calls and the potential consequences, again not just for themselves but for others as well.

Following on from this the students then had a sit down discussion with two specialist trained officers from the armed response unit. The aim of this part of the visit was to really drive home the dangers around knife crime, especially after tragic events that occurred in Birmingham last week and the increase in knife crime across the region, as well as nationally.

In my opinion as a neighbourhood beat officer who works closely with Rise under the safer schools partnership agreement, the visit was a complete success. Each student behaved themselves remarkably well and I have nothing but praise for each student who attended.

This is the second year in a row that I have arranged this visit with the KS3 students and on both occasions they have not let me, the teachers or themselves down and it has been a pleasure to be able to facilitate and I look forward to been able to plan more trips like this in the future.
