General Vision Statement
Rise Above is a small-scale Rise Provision that exists on Lambert Street, Hull. It represents an alternative to accessing Rise Academy’s core pathways but closely mirrors the curriculum journey other pupils within Rise are on. Rise Above caters to children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Using a bespoke approach to teaching and learning, our highly experienced staff engage pupils of all abilities in a wide range of academic subjects and life skills development.
Our small class sizes and flexible learning environment creates a provision for children with complex needs and neurodiversities in which they can thrive, achieve and succeed.
Our aims for all Rise Above pupils are:
- Accelerated academic progress in English, Maths and Science from their point of entry.
- A GCSE or IGCSE qualification in English and Maths (and a FS qualification where this is not feasible).
- Completion of a Computer Science and Life Skills Vocational Qualification.
- Acceptance onto a further education course, apprenticeship or internship after leaving school.
- A portfolio of completed life skills assessments demonstrating personal independence and competency in self-care, travel and planning.
- Completion of (and/or progress in) all EHCP targets for all pupils.
Who are we?
Rise Above is a nurture provision linked to Rise Academy. We specialise in teaching pupils with SEND who may have found the larger and less-regulated environments of mainstream education challenging to access resulting in behaviours non-conducive to effective learning. Our small team of practitioners is highly experienced in teaching approaches, curriculum and engaging pupils with a range of neurodiversities.
Where are we?
Rise Above is found on Lambert Street, Hull, HU5 2SG. The building was actually the oldest council-owned school building in Hull still in its original use. It was built 1879 and was partly demolished following war damage. A modern extension was built in 2004 which provides our pupils with two huge classrooms and an expansive outdoor learning environment.
What do we do?
At Rise Above, we support pupils with SEND to reach their potential. We explore educational approaches and pedagogy and apply our expertise to our knowledge of the ‘whole child’ in order to give each of our pupils the best possible chance to succeed and enjoy their education. We not only strive to meet the academic needs of our pupils but we focus heavily on promoting skills, independence and self-regulation in order to place our pupils on a pathway to becoming young adults who can explore, live and succeed in the world.
Why?
For our pupils with special educational needs and disabilities, our vision as teacher and educators within Rise Above is the same as our vision for all children and young people. We will enable them to achieve well in all aspects of their education and lead happy and fulfilled lives. We can do anything with the right type of tool… We can go anywhere with the right mode of transport… We can learn anything with the right approach to teaching…
How?
Rise Above runs a Primary Model of education with a Secondary Curriculum. Pupils have the same teachers in the same location but we deliver Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 learning to pupils in English, Math and Science as well as exploring other foundational subjects to provide our pupils with the widest possible curriculum experience. The needs of pupils are also met with enriching afternoon activities that are designed to stimulate and support in self-regulationIn addition, we prepare our students for life after school and encourage them to explore their options for higher education with ‘Life Skills’ and ‘Post-16’ lessons. We focus on the whole pupil…
