Good morning,
I am writing to you from the Hull Parent Carer Forum to share details of a new peer support and advice support group we are running over this next year for parents and carers of children and young people (aged 0-25).
We are specifically reaching out to specialist schools and alternative provisions because we know that many children in these settings present with neurodivergent needs specifically autism and learning disabiiites which can often bring co-occuring mental health challenges.
We want to support these families before they reach a crisis point.
This support is open to all parents/carers who feel their child has these needs. Crucially:
- No official diagnosis is required: Families do not need a formal diagnosis of Autism or a Learning Disability to attend.
- No current mental health involvement needed: Parents can access this support even if their child is not currently receiving help from mental health services (such as CAMHS).
How This Group Supports Parent Carers
In partnership with the Humber and North Yorkshire Dynamic Support Keyworker Service, we provide a safe space for parents to:
Meet other parents who understand your journey
Ask questions and share tips with others who are in similar situations
Feel less lonely, reducing the isolation that often comes with these challenges
We also aim to suppport parent carers by supporting them to :
- Navigate the SEND System
- Learn more about services and support available
Learn about the Dynamic Support Register (DSR) and Care Education and Treatment Reviews (CETRs), tools designed to provide extra oversight and prevent unnecessary mental health hospital admissions.
Find Practical Advice :Access information on Annual Health Checks, the Learning Disability Register, and local pathways.
Our Next Session
- When: Friday, 27th March, 9:30 am – 11:30 am.
- Where: Harrison Park (off Hall Road), Hull.
- Note: This is a parent-only session; refreshments are provided.
As parents ourselves, we know how daunting it can be to walk into a new group. If any parent is anxious, they can email us in advance and we will happily meet them outside the building to walk in together.
Request for your Support
We would be incredibly grateful if you could share the the letter with parent carers. via your usual form of communication such as
your newsletter, social media, or direct email or by also putting this letter up in areas where parent carers may be present.
Warm regards,
Tasha Smithson
Director
